Unify API Management & the Edge - Enhance & Secure Applications at Scale
Bilal Fazal, Manager Site Reliability Engineering at Gannett & Kristopher Vincent, Principal Engineer at Gannett
Continue with our 2022 Altitude Series with Gannett and how they secure their experiences across billions of requests.
Like most enterprises, Gannett, the publisher of many well-known media brands such as USA Today as well as hundreds of local media outlets in 46 states across the country, needed a robust API Gateway/Management platform that provides authentication, origin protection, and other features vital to scaling and protection. When the company discovered that their off-the-shelf API management solution was underperforming, Gannett discovered that they could create their own API management solution (which they call Fastly API Management (FAM)) using the versatile Fastly platform. By moving the API layer to Fastly’s platform, Manager, Site Reliability Engineering, Bilal Fazal, and Principal Engineer, Kris Vincent share how their team was able to significantly improve security, average response time and cost savings. Today FAM handles over 3 billion requests per month distributed across 89 proxies.

Altitude 2022: Edge Computing for Large Scale E-Commerce
Gustaf Nilsson Kotte, Senior Software Engineer at IKEA Retail (Ingka Group)
Continue our Altitude 2022 Series with how edge computing is helping Ingka Group of IKEA retail achieve success at scale.
IKEA.com is one of the 10th largest E-commerce websites (2021). Its web architecture is based on static files, supporting both static sites and client-side JavaScript applications. Static files have democratized web development for 50 frontend teams and allow for high availability, great web performance, and low operational cost. However, IKEA also begin to experience the limitations of this architecture, especially around A/B testing and personalization. Join Gustaf Nilsson Kotte in his discussion around the belief that edge computing will be a foundational technology that enables the teams to render HTML dynamically, while still having an available, performant, and low-cost solution.
Join us for our next session with Andrew Hartnett, Vice President of Software Engineering at New Relic, for a presentation for how edge computing helped them smartly scale.

Altitude 2022: Riding the Request Tsunami - Scaling New Relic’s Growth.
Andrew Hartnett, Vice President of Software Engineering at New Relic
Continue with our 2022 Altitude Series.
New Relic collects data, at a massive scale, from around the world. The company needed an edge partner that could smartly scale with its needs. Fastly's Compute@Edge helps to solve that challenge.
When the New Relic data plane made the move out of its own data centers, the company needed the ability to smartly route our data to the desired “cells” in the cloud. The cells represented smaller snapshots of New Relic architecture and were deployed as separate, isolated environments containing a subset of all of our customers’ telemetry data. Pushing this routing logic as close as possible to the customer became important so partnering with an Edge partner was a must. The scale and reliability of this system became plagued with issues as New Relic was growing the number of requests 5% month over month, leading to outages for its customers.
New Relic had a previous relationship with Fastly. After some due diligence looking into Fastly’s Compute@Edge, the decision was made to move the majority of this traffic. In this presentation, Andrew will be talking more in-depth about how New Relic is using Compute@Edge to deliver a reliable and performant routing solution, how they got there, and will also expand on the New Relic-Fastly partnership as they add integrations between systems and services.
